You know how in fashion lately there has been a little nod back to the 90’s – think chokers, the slip dresses with tee’s and the crop tops – well the latest 90’s trend to be brought back is one that I can’t get enough of… The MOM JEANS!
Let me break it down for you. The Mom jeans are high waisted, old school Levis. The same ones adorned on celebrity’s in the 90’s like Kate Moss and now on the likes of Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid and Candice Swanepoel. I could stop right here, I mean with the list of names I’ve just given you this should be enough for you to run out and grab a pair, yes?! Yes, these jeans are the same ones your mum probably wore in the 90’s – I know my mum used to rock a pair, in fact I believe we all did… the proof was on the wall of our family home – A beautiful family portrait from the 90’s where we are all wearing… you guessed it… high wasted denim. Mom jeans. Except for Dad. He was wearing Dad jeans. But we were out in the bush somewhere (surely a family portrait in the bush in the 90’s was a right of passage?) feeling like rock-stars but looking far, far from it. We thought high-waisted, saggy bum denims were cool… until we hit the 2000’s and then we begged our parents to take down those nasty pictures of us rocking these absurd outfits, which they did and later replaced pictures of us with our kids. Such is the circle of life.
Back to the issue at hand. Mom Jeans. Of course they weren’t called Mom jeans in the 90’s – they were just called ‘jeans’ but now we affectionately refer to them as ‘mom’ jeans. Ironic isn’t it that not many moms are actually wearing the mom jeans, and most of my mummy friends had to ask me what they were. I tried the trend and even though I was taken back to Jennifer Aniston in friends, there was something kind of cool about wearing them. I wasn’t sure if (like songs or certain smells can take you back) I was loving being taken back to a time that was much simpler. The days of simple living – riding your bike around the neighborhood until it was dinner, or waiting for the Mr Whippy van to drive past your street on a hot summer night – maybe that is what I am loving about high waisted jeans.
Now it seems when I go back to my wardrobe to wear my skinny leg jeans I feel like they are… ‘mumsy’. It’s an upside down world folks…
