Its the day that I have been waiting for… Finally Perth, we get Coco! Chanel is opening it’s doors in the most fashionable street in Perth! King Street will now play home to Prada, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany & Co and finally, Chanel.
Coco Chanel and I were born 100 years apart almost to the day, I, in August 1983 and she in August 1883 (which makes us both Leos and both of similar nature!). She was responsible for the LBD and costume jewellery and those to-die-for tweed jackets!
For those of you who do not know, my online boutique www.houseofaubazine.com.au carries the name of the orphanage in which Chanel spent most of her childhood and where the future designer learned to sew. After her mother’s death, Coco Chanel’s father dropped her and her sisters off at the orphanage at the abbey at Aubazine in Corrèze, France.
It is unknown how the most widely recognized double C’s came to be about, some say it was from Catherine de Medici (Queen of France in the 16th Century). The double C’s date back further than that though, with Queen Claude of France (Catherine de Medici’s mother in law) also using the double C’s as part of her insignia.
It could have been the interlocking Cs at Château Crémat, a château in Nice that Irène Bretz, (an American heiress) purchased that caught the eye of Coco. Coco Chanel would often attend parties hosted at Château Crémat and “one summer night Coco Chanel looked up at a vaulted arch at one of Irène’s famous parties and found inspiration in a Renaissance medallion: two interlocking Cs.” (The Secret of Chanel Nº5, Tilar J. Mazzeo, p.107)
I like to think that it was her time spent at Aubazine that inspired her… maybe it was the stained glass windows in the abbey of Aubazine…
Chanel opens in King Street, Perth on December 12.
