I am a kid of the 80’s/90’s… er…was a kid of the 80’s/90’s. That’s right, I loved the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Beverly Hills 90210, full house, hyper-colour t-shirts, mood rings, the Spice Girls and the list could go on. I had ‘Clueless’ on repeat and even then I remember thinking…. wow, when I grow up I am like sooooo going to have one of those wardrobes!
So, its the 21st century and I am all grown up. Sure, we love our iphones, ipads, ipods and to most people Facebook is just as important as the air they breathe but sometimes (read most of the time) I crave the good ol’ 80’s and 90’s, a time when I had not a worry in the world and those fluro yellow bike shorts looked damn good with my fluro pink t-shirt whilst singing the words to ‘Locomotion’ (okay so it was released in the late 80’s but I was still singing it in the 90’s!)
I don’t miss denim skirts that finish just above the ankle, nor do I miss the trend where you tie your jumper around your waist and I certainly don’t miss those hats that Blossom used to wear, you remember Blossom, right?
Anyway, the 90’s are back with a 2012 spin on it! Maybe its the 20 year cycle that happens in fashion, or maybe we are tired of watching the likes of the Kardashians with that super perfect hair and make up or maybe we just want a bit of nostalgia in a post GFC, post 9/11 world… whatever it is, the world is loving it.
I have to say that when I went to preview the Summer Wildfox collection for House of Aubazine its theme was the 90’s and I fell in love with all of it! Dont be fooled though, this new take on the 90’s is a complete contradiction, glam and grunge, dark and feminie and 2012 has certainly been a clash of the styles.
How strange it was watching my 7 year old daughter in a fluro yellow dress, with bright blue shoes and a fluro pink necklace on the weekend… Some one (me) really needs to teach her the words to Locomotion…
