This seasons current trend is one of my personal favourites… Peplum. Peplums were featured in Dior’s new look collection back in the 1940’s and while we have seen them flirting with the idea of making a comeback in past seasons it seems the 2012 spring runways is where they have really demanded the attention… and in the last few weeks I have seen them filter through to the high street.
It is true that peplums add volume at the hips which is enough to scare any woman that isn’t a size 0 but the truth is that if you choose the right peplum it can be one of the most flattering styles you will own. For those of you who are heavier at the bottom, steer clear of peplums attached to a skirt that flare out lower and instead opt for one that really cinches in high at the waist and then flares out directly from the waist. If you choose a peplum that shoots out lower it will exaggerate big hips but if the peplum shoots out higher at the waist it will ‘hide’ a large tummy and detract from bigger thighs. … and no, you no longer need to wear your peplum jacket with a skirt just for the office but try it with pants or jeans or even shorts for a modern take.
For those of you with a boyish figure or straight up and down, the peplum creates an hourglass silhouette and you have the choice of wearing either a lower peplum on a skirt or a higher peplum at the waist on a jacket…both will flatter your body shape and add the illusion of curves.
So, think about getting your peplum on…
