Perth based fashion designer Steph Audino has caught the eye of this years Perth Fashion Festival team… and rightly so. The label which is uniquely beautiful is getting ready to show at this years Perth Fashion Festival and ‘Perthites’ are in for a real treat. With the excitement of setting up her new studio, Steph agreed to answer some of our burning StyleCrush questions, so in her own words here is a glimpse of the girl behind the label.
StyleCrush: When did you first start designing? And tell us why and how you got into fashion design?
Steph Audino: I started designing and making my own clothes at the age of 16. I would see something in a magazine and think I can make that so I started draping fabrics to create whatever I could, I was completely clueless in the pattern making side of things but as long as it looked great from the outside I was happy. It wasn’t until I was 18 that I started sewing lessons as a hobby. When I graduated from high school I originally went to Curtin University to study Urban and Regional Planning. I stuck it out for a year but I knew it wasn’t for me. I always had my heart set on designing and making clothes so I finished up at Uni and went to Challenger Tafe in Fremantle and completed a Diploma in Fashion Design & Technology.
StyleCrush: What is the most difficult aspect of running your own label ‘Steph Audino’?
Steph Audino: The biggest challenge I have come across so far is handling and juggling everything on my own. It can get a bit much at times but you just have to think of what the outcome will be if you push through it all. So far the outcomes have been magnificent so it just keeps me pushing for more.
StyleCrush: What are some of the ‘perks’ in running your own fashion label?
Steph Audino: There have been 2 big perks, one being seeing people wearing my label. It is one thing to create clothes but to see the public wearing my designs has wanted me to create more and more and the second one being Perth Fashion Festival. I know more of the perks for PFF are still to come but just receiving the email saying CONGRATUATIONS and being able to put together my own looks has been great.
StyleCrush: Where do you get your design inspiration from?
Steph Audino: Anything and everything. One day it can be nature the next it can be a building, it changes all the time. Sometimes it can be hard designing for a collection that I have been building up for 2 months and then I find something else and get side tracked but its good to keep those ideas for future collections so I always keep a book with me and write down everything I think of. I have these mood boards in my studio that I always refer back to, as this is how I in vision the Steph Audino girls to look and feel.
StyleCrush: Who is your fashion icon?
Steph Audino: I have a few but I love SJP, she always looks classy, fabulous and glamorous.
StyleCrush: What are the big trends for 2012/2013?
Steph Audino: Big trends would have to be Neon’s, Pastels and Candy Cane colours. Underwater seascapes inspirations, floral prints, translucent fabrics, sporty chic, colour blocking and full skirts.
StyleCrush: What can we expect to see from your next collection?
Steph Audino: Surprisingly a lot of colour! I always love black but I have stepped out this season and introduced pastel pinks, purples and blues. I have also had the opportunity to travel overseas to design and produce my own unique fabrics so an exclusive print also.
StyleCrush: You are in the process of setting up your studio on the corner of Beaufort Street and Crawford Street – Will customers be able to purchase direct from you there? Who will be stocking your new collection?
Steph Audino: At the moment customers won’t be able to buy ready to wear pieces directly from me as I would love for them to build up repute with my stockists and know where Steph Audino is available from. Although I will have my couture collection available for purchase at my studio. They will be available for made to measure so you can guarantee a beautifully designed and made gown that fits and suits your body shape.
StyleCrush: What advice would you give to anyone wanting to start a career in fashion design?
Steph Audino: Work your hardest. You need sheer determination and sleepless nights here and there but if you stick it out you will eventually get to where you want to be. Always draw and write down what you think of. I love this quote…
The best thing to do is dive with your imagination ~ you can never drown yourself. – Karl Lagerfeld.
