With school starting this week it seems the topic of conversation has been the all important first day back, but not for the reasons you may think. We are talking first day back outfits… for the mothers, yes I am serious. There was an article in Harpers Bazaar about this very topic and while I feel it is every womans right to dress as they please when they please, I will be opting for classroom casual.
Sure, I want to look decent (think I will pass on my old favourite ripped shorts and t-shirt in favour of something clean and in one piece!) for the first day of school photos that will be looked upon time and time again by my children and then grandchildren but obsessing about the outfit for that all important first day back just seems a little too much, doesnt it?
My children attend a lovely school where there is no pressure to be “on” as I like to put it – we have lovely, friendly faces everywhere we look. A friend of mine told me that she had heard the expression (coined by one of her fellow school mums) “carpark mafia” given to the mothers that congregate in the carpark after school (luckily at our school this is not a concern) – It did get me thinking, do mothers feel the pressure to dress a certain way, either by other mothers or by celebrity mothers they see in glossy mags? It is every mothers right to dress as she pleases for the drop off and pick up… 5inch Louboutins? why not if thats what you like. A brand new dress for first day of school? Go for it. Not up for a runway show? thats alright too, come as you are! Some mothers are dressed for work, some are dressed because it is their right and some because they have somewhere to be. I am guilty of doing the pick up in Louboutins on occasion (where there hasnt been time to change) and sure some days I just need to get “dressed” so I can feel partly human but agonizing over “the first day back outfit” just might be where I draw the line.
For the mothers that are contemplating outfits tomorrow I wish you luck in your preparations, I know I will be attending in something very very cool (to try and escape that 38 degree day) but as for the specifics, I will decide tomorrow morning after I have made lunches, prepared school bags, brushed hair and everything else that goes along with the back to school routine…
